Historical Review

The founding team of the Integral Risk Management Research Center (CIGIR) was initially set up in 1979, when the Special Commission for the Prevention of Seismic Risk (CEAPRIS), now the Prevention Foundation, was set up in Mérida, Venezuela. of Seismic Risk (FUNDAPRIS).
Following the significant demand for efforts to reduce the disasters that were generated after the tragic episodes that occurred in the Latin American context during the last decade of the last century, this professional team comprised of: Alejandro Liñayo, Raúl Estévez, Jaime Laffaille, William Lobo , Carlos Ferrer and Alejandro Ochoa, decided to create the CIGIR in 2007, with the support of the Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology -FUNDACITE Mérida- and contributions from important private companies such as: Total & Oil Gas Venezuela.
This is how CIGIR is constituted, as an independent and non-profit organization, committed to approaching from a much broader perspective, a greater range of regional scenarios of socio-natural and technological risks, thanks to the consolidation of efforts and the labor of a group of regional specialists from different disciplines, concerned about the situation of vulnerability in Latin America and the Caribbean, and interested in promoting the integral management of disaster risk
Among the main allies with which the CIGIR has executed its project agenda we can highlight: IDB, JICA, CAF, EU, State Alumni, UNDP, SELA, Total Oil & Gas, Beremhs, ISDR UN, USAID - OFDA, GTZ, Embassy of the United States, PDVSA, Min. Science and Technology, Min. Environment, Min. Education, Min. of Planning, State Governorates: Mérida, Sucre, Táchira, Lara, Mayor of Chacao municipality (Miranda) and Libertador (Mérida).
